Considered by some of the local people as sacred animals, macaques or monkeys are tolerated around the Balinese temples, as well as Uluwatu temple. Except Uluwatu temple, there are monkey forests in Ubud and Sangeh which are popular as tourist attractions.
At the Uluwatu temple, tourist who ignore the 'DO NOT FEED THE MONKEYS! KEEP VALUEABLES OUT OF SIGHT' sign may have their sunglasses, hats, earrings, and cameras suddenly snatched away.
